The Gift of Water
Providing safe water, improving sanitation and hygiene facilities, and ensuring hygiene education can all help reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases.
About
Globally, 1 in 3 people do not have access to safe drinking water. This number skyrockets to 2 in 3 people without access to sanitation facilities. And, 1 in 9 people do not have access to basic hygiene.
The lack of access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene results in preventable waterborne diseases claim 88% of diarrheal deaths and 75% of intestinal infectious diseases. Children under the age of five years old are especially vulnerable, as they account for almost half of all water-related deaths.
Water-related diseases are often caused by contaminated water sources and poor sanitation and hygiene practices. Inadequate clean water supply, poor sanitation, and poor hygiene lead to increased exposure to contaminated water, which can cause a number of waterborne diseases.
