While Yemen has suffered from chronic underdevelopment and a series of localized conflicts, this level of emergency and the magnitude of its impact on children’s education as well as the schools and education facilities, is beyond what the education sector was prepared to handle.

Of 10.1 million school-aged girls and boys (5-17 years old) in Yemen, the Education Cluster estimates that 8.1 million need assistance. About 2.9 million are in acute need. The severity of needs has been estimated based on enrolment data, non-functional schools, school-aged displaced children, availability of paid teachers, and areas with disease concerns. 

Conflict and continued disruption of schooling are having a profound impact on the development of nearly all school-aged boys and girls in Yemen. Data show 2,507 schools have been destroyed, damaged, or used for non-educational purposes, affecting learning for 1.1 million children. 

Of these schools, 58 percent are damaged by conflict or floods, and 30 percent are hosting IDPs, used as quarantine centers, or occupied by armed groups. The conditions in functioning schools are inadequate. Overcrowded, under-resourced schools with mixed-aged and mixed-ability learning environments increase educational needs. 

We aim to ensure that girls and boys have equal access to education services in priority districts in Yemen through the rehabilitation and maintenance of five schools, including the Rehabilitation and Repairing of classes, Rehabilitation of Annex Rooms (for Admin), and Rehabilitation and Repairing Water and Sanitation Facilities of the schools. The selection criteria are areas prioritized for school rehabilitation, damaged schools, and areas with large numbers of students.
